The story of Jake and I
Is was way back in 2010, I think, when my world collided with a fiercely handsome young man. His dirty blonde hair swooped to the side with ease while he placed his flat brim Syracuse hat, backwards and a little to the side, on his head. He played soccer, basketball, and competed in different events in track. He knew pretty much everyone and everyone knew him. He was outgoing, kind, and did I mention really cute?
Although I don’t remember the exact moment that we met I know it wasn’t too long before we became friends. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a crush on him and do I dare say that I was slightly in love? I went to his soccer games and took photos of him and the rest of his team playing. I may have even gone as far as printing them out and giving them to him as a gift. Hello creepy stalker girl! Not really though, he liked them, I think… On one of my family trips to Bethany Beach I took an empty tennis container, filled it with sand and brought it back for him. Super romantic (or corny, or just plain weird), I know!
He may not have known my secret love for him for a while but eventually we ended up dating! You guys… it was the best SIX DAYS OF MY LIFE! Yes, you did read that correctly, 6 whole days. I know what you’re thinking, “Nicole, what happened?” “Can you even consider 6 days having a relationship?” To keep a long story short, he got back together with his ex-girlfriend, she was really pretty, super nice, and everyone loved her, including him. Cue mini stairway sob fest. Ahh the glory days of high school! We did manage to sneak in going to homecoming together and he wore a pink tie that matched my dress perfectly!
We remained friend and went on to date other people. He was a year older then me and when his graduation came you bet I was upset that the halls of my small town school would be Jakeless. We seldom saw each other over the next couple of years between jobs, moves, college, and everything else that consumed our youthful lives. On my way to work one day I receive a text with a photo from a number I didn’t recognize. It was a group text and none of the numbers were in my phone so I politely responded that they had the wrong number. Deleting the message and not thinking too much about it I went on with my day.
A few days later a photo popped up of him on Facebook which led me to scrolling though his photos to see what he had been up to lately. As I was scrolling that recognizable Facebook ding caught my attention. It was him. Completely taken back by this coincidence I immediately closed out of Facebook and a million thoughts came into my head. “Did I like one of his photos or posts by accident?” “How did he know I was thinking about him?”
After calming myself down from being absolutely ridiculous I read his message. “NICOLE!!!!!!!!” I instantly smiled and replied by saying his whole name back. He told me he had tried to text me a picture the other day and he must have the wrong number…. OOPS. It took me a minute and then I realized that it was me who didn’t have his number, not the other way around. A wave of embarrassment came over me when I responded unveiling the truth. “I’m such a jerk!” I thought to myself. Little did I know that the photo he sent me was of the tennis container filled with sand along with the photographs I took of him and printed out way back in high school. He kept all of it!
We went on to set a date to get together and catch up on life. He just moved in to a new apartment and I helped him unpack while he made us dinner, chicken stir fry! He took out the container of sand and showed me the photographs from back in our glory days at Newark Valley High School. We hung out almost every day after that and not too long after we decided to make it official! What an adventure it has been this past year but an extremely fun and loved filled adventure! From the first time I met him almost 9 years ago he’s only gotten more handsome, more funny, and more loving than I remember.
I guess you could call us high school sweethearts… right? Even though it was one sided for a long time, that’s when it all began.
The top image is at his senior Homecoming dance back in 2011 and the bottom is us now, in 2019! He still has great hair!
