Thinking of a romantic and adventurous destination elopement in Iceland? Can I tag along, please? With all the secret spots, black sand beaches, volcanos, hidden waterfalls, and the potential for an exciting jeep adventure, who wouldn’t want to elope there? There are so many different backdrop options for your ceremony, your adventures, and all your elopement photos. Plus, getting to Iceland is pretty easy, with numerous direct flights from major US cities. Almost everyone in Iceland speaks English so there isn’t a huge language barrier which makes is nice and simple to navigate and ask for help if needed.
So, if your hearts are set on eloping here, these are my suggestions for the 12 best Iceland elopement locations.

Kirkjufell
Kirkjufell, or ‘Church Mountain’ is one of Iceland’s most popular locations (and most photographed peaks!). It’s not a very tall mountain but it has very interesting slopes and an interesting flow to it. At the bottom of the mountain, you’ll also find a beautiful lake. And if you’re a fan of the night sky, the northern lights here are an absolute spectacle.
Just so you know, this is a VERY popular tourist location, so you probably will not be able to have the place all for yourself, but a sunrise ceremony on a weekday might give you the most privacy!
Reynisfjara Beach
Located on Iceland’s South Coast, you’ll find its famous black-sand beach—Reynisfjara Beach. The stark contrast of its black sands against your white attire will make your elopement photos pop with a dramatic flair. The huge basalt columns, rugged cliffs and caves, and, of course, the stunning panoramic views offer a unique setting for your Iceland elopement and adventures to follow.
Skógafoss
Skógafoss is one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls. The waterfall produces a lot of splash and drizzle, so prepare to potentially get a bit wet! But that also means that you will be able to see beautiful rainbows even on perfectly sunny days.
This one is also a popular visitor spot, but with me as your guide, we can still find somewhere private for your Iceland elopement there. However, with thousands of waterfalls in Iceland, we’re spoiled for choice if you crave a more secluded spot!
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Visiting Seljalandsfoss is a magical waterfall experience for your elopement day because you don’t only get to SEE it, you get to EXPERIENCE it. Walking behind this beauty offers a unique and otherworldly location for your Iceland elopement. It’s accessible, yet it feels like a hidden world away from everything.
Westfjords
If you’re looking for solitude and untouched beauty, Westfjords is the perfect Iceland elopement location for you. This remote corner of Iceland offers the raw beauty of dramatic landscapes that range from rugged cliffs to serene beaches.
Landmannalaugar
Landmannalaugar is a popular Iceland hiking spot with its rhyolite mountains painting the landscape in hues of pink, green, and gold. Whether you’re soaking in a natural hot spring post-ceremony or exploring the scenic trails, your elopement here will be as unique and colorful as the landscape itself.
Víti Lake
For a unique and rather minimalistic backdrop, Víti Lake‘s calm waters and surrounding landscapes offer a tranquil setting for your Iceland adventure elopement. This is an explosion crater turned into a geothermal lake, which I think is super cool! An Iceland elopement location like no other!
Búðakirkja
Búðakirkja is a stunning black church set against Iceland’s dramatic landscapes. Surrounded by lava fields, mountains, and the vast sky, this church is a gorgeous place to elope in Iceland.
Lagoon of Jökulsárlón
The lagoon of Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s most famous glacier lagoon. Here you’ll find icebergs drifting lazily in icy waters, seals in their natural habitat, and the northern lights occasionally gracing the sky. It’s an absolutely picturesque winter wonderland vibe elopement location!
Diamond Beach
Diamond Beach is where black sands meet the icebergs. Walk hand in hand with your partner with the sound of waves and the crunch of ice under your feet while gazing upon the large ice chunks broken off from the nearby glacier.
Dyrhólaey
The home of a famous rock arch of the same name, the Dyrhólaey Peninsula offers panoramic views of the Atlantic, black sand beaches, rock formations, and endless sky. One thing you need to know about eloping here is to look out for the spring/summer nesting seasons when Dyrhólaey has limited access. You can read more about that here!
Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the Golden Circle route. The park is known for its stunning landscapes, including the Almannagjá rift valley and the Þingvallavatn Lake. The park’s historical and geological significance, as well as its natural beauty, make it a popular choice for elopements.
Hverir Geothermal Area
Located near Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland, Hverir is a geothermal area known for its bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and colorful mineral deposits. The otherworldly landscape of Hverir provides a unique and surreal backdrop for an elopement, especially for couples looking for something truly unique.
