How to Plan the Perfect Sunrise Elopement

When planning your intimate wedding, you may want to consider a sunrise elopement! There’s nothing quite as magical as exchanging vows while the first light of day paints the sky with shades of pink, gold, and purple. A sunrise elopement offers more privacy, peace, and breathtaking beauty that you can’t find at any other time of day. We all know those beautiful views with the tips of the mountains begin to illuminate! If you’re dreaming of a mountaintop ceremony, here’s everything you need to on how to plan the perfect sunrise elopement.

Why Choose a Sunrise Elopement?

The biggest reason couples opt for a mountain sunrise elopement is the privacy. While popular trails and summits often fill up by mid-morning, sunrise offers solitude and serenity. The lighting is also dreamy—soft, golden, and incredibly flattering for your photos. Sunrise and sunset are two of the best times of the day for pictures! And starting your day with your wedding vows means you’ll have the rest of the day to celebrate with adventures, family, or to simply relax and spend quality time together.

Timing Is Everything

One of the most important aspects of a sunrise elopement is timing. Unlike a traditional ceremony, this requires a bit more planning and flexibility. Here’s what you’ll need to be aware of:

  • Know the sunrise time for your chosen date and location. (Apps like SkySafari or Google’s sunrise chart are helpful.)
  • Hike in the dark. To be on the summit 15–30 minutes before sunrise, you’ll need to hike up while it’s still dark. Bring headlamps with extra batteries to keep your hands free. Please do not wear your headlamps on your head as they’ll leave a mark and it’s not cute for photos.
  • Build in buffer time. Hiking often takes longer in the dark. Leave earlier than you think you need to—there’s no such thing as being too early for sunrise!
  • Visit the trailhead in advance. We all know that some trailheads can be harder to find than others. Visit the trailhead before the morning of your elopement so you’ll know exactly where to go.

Pro Tip: Arriving before the sun peeks over the horizon gives you the chance to watch the sky shift and see the mountain peaks begin to shine.

What to Pack for Your Sunrise Elopement

Preparation is key to making your early morning stress-free. Pack everything the night before so you’re ready to grab and go! Here’s a list of things to consider packing for your sunrise elopement:

  • Headlamps or flashlights (hands-free is best, but please don’t wear them on your head! Hold your headlamps like a flashlight and make sure they’re fully charged!)
  • Layers of clothing (Mornings are chilly even in summer. Bring layers just in case)
  • Blanket to stay warm on the summit, to snuggle together, or to sit on.
  • Bouquet or boutonniere, if you want florals. Wrap your flowers in a wet paper towel with tin foil or in a ziplock bag to keep them fresh.
  • Small speaker for a first dance at sunrise. Only if you want to of course!
  • Water bottles and a thermos with hot coffee or tea. Staying hydrated is essential! Be sure to bring plenty of water and mugs if you’re planning on indulging in coffee on a mountain top.
  • Snacks or breakfast picnic like pastries, fruit, and bagels. Head to a local bakery the day before like Cedar Run Bakery or Green Goddess Natural Foods to stock up on some yummy breakfast items for your sunrise hike
  • Pack your Wedding Attire safely if you’re hiking in athletic clothes. Don’t forget shoes if you plan to wear something other than hiking boots.

Breakfast on the Summit

Starting your wedding day with a cozy picnic is such a memorable touch. Some fun ideas for your elopement breakfast spread include:

  • Fresh pastries or croissants from a local bakery
  • Bagels with cream cheese or lox
  • A charcuterie board with fruit, cheese, and crackers
  • Hot coffee or tea in a thermos
  • Champagne or mimosas for a celebratory toast

Your breakfast can be as simple or as indulgent as you’d like! It’s about starting your marriage in a way that feels true to you so bring your favorite breakfast foods to celebrate!

Best Time of Year for a Sunrise Elopement

Every season brings its own kind of beauty, but some times of year are better suited for mountain elopements:

  • Spring: Crisp/cold mornings, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds.
  • Summer: Warm weather and clear trails, but be prepared for earlier sunrise times.
  • Fall: Cool, comfortable hiking weather with stunning foliage. Arguably the best season for a mountain sunrise but brings out a lot of people.
  • Winter: Snowy landscapes and sparkling skies, but only if you’re experienced with hiking in very cold temps and in snow/ice.

When choosing your date, think about trail conditions, accessibility, and what scenery you’d like as your backdrop. Some trails do close during the Winter months for safety reasons, so do your research ahead of time. This should help you on figuring out when and how to plan the perfect sunrise elopement.

The Best Adirondack Locations for your Sunrise Elopement

Finding the perfect location when planning your sunrise elopement can be overwhelming, but I’m here to help! Here are a few hikes around the Adirondacks with epic sunrise views. From simple hikes for beginners to more difficult trails for experienced hikers, these summits are perfect for morning vows with mountain views. These Adirondack locations are great spots to consider when figuring out how to plan the perfect sunrise elopement.

Mt. Van Hoevenburg – As a somewhat newly constructed trail, this hike, although it does have quite an incline and stairs, offers amazing views with plenty of space at the summit for a sunrise picnic and mountain views.
Cobble Lookout
– Cobble Lookout is one of my favorite trails to take my couples on for their intimate wedding near Lake Placid. It’s just over a mile each way with very little incline. It’s more like a nice walk in the woods to a jaw dropping view!
Big Crow – Although Big Crow is a short hike in Keene, NY, it’s definitely steep and many breaks are needed. It’s a great location to watch the sunrise with a perfect mountain view.
Owl’s Head – This is another short yet steep hike in the Adirondack region. It offers amazing views with just about a mile hike each way. Owl’s head is on private property and closed Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Indian Head – At just about 9.5 miles, this trail is for more experienced hikers. However, if you are willing to make this trek, it’s one of the best views in the ADK, especially during the Fall season.

Extra Tips for an Unforgettable Sunrise Elopement

  • Scout your location ahead of time. If possible, hike the trail during daylight so you’re familiar with the route.
  • Hire an experienced elopement photographer. Not only will they capture every detail, but they’ll also help create the perfect timeline for you and your partner, give you tips on some of the best local trails, and help you plan your whole day!
  • Bring hand warmers and extra socks. Comfort is key to enjoying your morning elopement. Pack layers and be prepared for any kind of weather.
  • Consider weekday dates. Trails are often quieter during the week, giving you more privacy. Even if you aren’t planning a sunrise elopement, I highly recommend picking a weekday over a weekend. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!
